It was ultimately a successful night for Liverpool as they beat Midtjylland 2-0 at Anfield in the Champions League group stages.

With the usual front three starting the game on the substitutes bench, it was a tough first half for the Reds as they struggled to create any clear-cut chances - entering the break without a shot on target.

Gini Wijnaldum's half-time introduction gave the Reds a slight lift as they scored the crucial opener a little under ten minutes after the restart.

Xherdan Shaqiri's reverse pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold saw the right-back play a low ball across the six-yard box for Diogo Jota, who netted his second successive goal for the Reds to make it 1-0.

Despite Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane coming on as substitutes, Midtjylland remained a big threat with big chances of their own.

But the Reds eventually sealed the game in injury time as Salah converted a penalty after being brought down in the box, with the Egyptian opening his tally in the Champions League this season.

It was an atypical performance from Jurgen Klopp's side, who appeared pedestrian in their play for much of the fixture.

The main concern remains an injury sustained by Fabinho in the first-half, with scans on Saturday morning to reveal the full prognosis.
