Jurgen Klopp's young Reds got off to the best possible start as Shkodran Mustafi scored an own-goal inside the opening ten minutes.

However, the Gunners hit back with three goals in 17 minutes as Lucas Torreira equalised and Gabriel Martinelli put the visitors ahead with a brace.

James Milner scored a penalty before half-time after Harvey Elliot was brought down in the box, only for Unai Emery's side to make it 4-2 through Ainsley Maitland-Niles minutes after the interval.

Two sensational strikes from outside of the box from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi put Liverpool back on level terms, but the Gunners struck once more through Joe Willock to take the lead.

With seconds remaining, youngster Neco Williams' cross was met by Origi, who acrobatically turned the ball into the back of the net with a stunning bicycle kick to take the game to penalties.

The Reds were flawless in the shootout, with Curtis Jones scoring the Reds' fifth and final penalty to secure victory after Dani Ceballos had his effort saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool will find out who their quarter-final opponents will be in the draw on Thursday morning, although Klopp has suggested his side could drop out of the competition due to fixture congestion.
