17th April 2023

Aside from , is the longest-serving player in the Liverpool squad, having been at the club since 2015.

It's certainly an impressive feat, as Gomez was one of ' final signings before the Irishman was sacked in October 2015, just months into the England defender's Liverpool career.

Luckily for him, then stepped and the rest was history.

The 25-year-old has won everything there is to during his time on , however, major struggles this season has brought forth the question, is Joe Gomez coming to the end of his time at Liverpool?

It's time to depart

Gomez's career at Liverpool is a strange one.

While I think most fans will agree that he's no doubt been a success after arriving as an 18-year-old kid from Charlton who'd played just 21 games of professional football and none in the top flight, injuries have no doubt played a major part in the derailing of his career multiple times.

Just days after Klopp became Liverpool manager, Gomez suffered an ACL injury that ruled him out for a year.

While the defender impressed most times he played, he was unable to truly stake his claim as the first-choice centre-back due to the injuries he'd suffer.

Blessed physically with strength and pace, the lower leg injuries he's had to contend with during his career don't seem to have affected those attributes with concentration issues the main culprit for the mistakes he's made, namely this season (/23).

Mistakes against the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds, which resulted in losses, damaged Liverpool's momentum amid a struggling season while he put in a howler of a performance in Liverpool's 5-2 defeat at against .

Despite a five-year deal last summer, rumours of a move to Newcastle and were spread, suggesting Liverpool may be open to cutting ties with Gomez after a problematic season.

He's still young

After eight years at the club, Gomez is still just 25 years old.

He remains the second-youngest senior centre-back at the club, just two years older than Ibrahima Konate.

We would be remiss not to mention that Gomez was the main partner of when Liverpool won the in 2019/20.

The South London-born player played 28 league games that season, the highest total in his career for a season as he put on impressive performances one after the other.

Gomez can still improve and with van Dijk and both over 30 years old, he can still become an integral part of Liverpool's future.
