Liverpool have drawn another European heavyweight in the Round of 16 in the Champions League. The Reds will face PSG who are the reigning French League 1 title holders. The first leg will be held on March 5th in Paris and Anfield will host the return fixture on March 11th.
A Rare Meeting
The two sides have met twice in Cup competitions before. In 1997 Liverpool lost by one goal on aggregate in the now defunct Cup Winner's Cup. In 2018, the clubs met again in the Champions League Group Stage. In the first leg at Anfield. Roberto Firmino provided a stoppage-time strike for a 3-2 win. PSG won the reverse fixture 2-1, but Liverpool still advanced out of the group stage and eventually lifted the trophy.
What Does Slot Say?
Like the rest of us, Arne Slot is looking forward to the challenge of playing PSG.
“At this stage of the competition, the quality of opponent is only going to be of a very high standard and in PSG we have drawn a team and a club with real European pedigree,” he said. “As is the case with ourselves, PSG are top of their domestic league and are enjoying a long unbeaten run. This tells us all that we need to know about the challenge that we will face but it is also a challenge that we will look forward to, knowing that we also fully deserve to be in the last 16.”
LFC Globe Verdict
This will be high drama must-watch football. Both sides are at the top of their domestic leagues with household names all over the pitch. Honestly, there is not much separating the two sides on paper. I think it will be key for the Reds to leave Paris with a result which could set up another magical night at Anfield in the return fixture.
