Liverpool have enjoyed an impressive start to their 2018/19 season, winning all seven matches so far and topping the Premier League table.
The Reds strolled to victory against Southampton on Saturday as they continued their fine form going into Wednesday night's fixture.
Chelsea, led by new manager Maurizio Sarri, have been equally impressive during the start of the season having won all but one game so far.
The two sides come up against each other with one eye on Saturday's Premier League game at Stamford Bridge and both managers are expected to make changes.
However, manager Jurgen Klopp insisted ahead of the game that his side must take the competition seriously, with the Reds still awaiting their first trophy under the boss.
With wholesale changes expected, the key for Liverpool will be to keep up their momentum and head into the third round with as little fuss as possible.
Team News
Virgil van Dijk is likely to be rested after suffering a rib injury against Southampton, however he is expected back for Saturday's fixture.
Dejan Lovren is expected to make his return from injury whilst Dominic Solanke has also recovered from a knock sustained on U23 duty. Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster are all still sidelined.
Whilst Klopp stated that he is unlikely to field a whole different eleven, he is expected to make at least a handful of changes to the side that beat Saints at Anfield.
Simon Mignolet is confirmed to start, whilst Nathaniel Clyne, Alberto Moreno, Naby Keita and Daniel Sturridge are all expected to also be drafted in.
Xherdan Shaqiri could also be given his second start of the season, having being taken off at half-time despite being heavily involved during the first 45 minutes on Saturday.
For Chelsea, Eden Hazard is likely to be rested with Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Pedro also sidelined. Sarri is expected to play a young line-up including Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
