Local product Curtis Jones signs extension with Reds

Jacob -

Midfielder Curtis Jones signed a new 5-year contract with the Reds on November 17th, keeping the 21-year old at Anfield through the 2027 season. The new deal is worth reportedly £2,444,000 per year with the possibility of incentives.

“I'm over the moon, I'm buzzing, it was an easy thing [to decide to renew],” Jones said. “It's my boyhood club, I'm a Scouser. I've supported the club for the whole of my life, so yeah, I'm buzzing and I can't wait to see what the future holds.”

Jones is a Liverpool native and signed with the club's Youth Academy at the age of 6, but the decision to sign a long-term deal with the Reds was more than just playing for his boyhood club.

“If I was at a different club as well, my goal and aim and dream would always be to come here and play,” Jones said. “But I'm here now. I've been here since I was six. I've gone all the way through. I've supported the team for the whole of my life and especially now with how the team is and the coaching staff around me, I just feel that it's the perfect place for me and again, as I said, I can't wait to see what the future holds.”

Jones joined the senior squad in January 2019  in an FA Cup fixture vs Wolves. He first of eight career goals came almost exactly a year later when he found the back of the net for the game-winner in a 1-0 FA Cup victory vs Everton. In all, Jones has made 81 appearances for the Reds and has the distinction of being the youngest captain in Liverpool history when he wore the armband during a 2020 match vs Shrewsbury.

Now that Jones is under a new contract, he has plenty of goals for the future.

“Really just putting a mark out there,” he said. “Since I came around the team there has always been hype around me. I've always been the kid who's coming in. I'm a Scouser who has scored important goals and stuff, but at the same time, I don't think that I've really showed the real me. I've spoken a lot about how I have changed my game, I'm adapting, I'm maturing and stuff so I feel that it's coming together as one now. So, I just feel that now is the time to go out there and show the real me and start to score more goals, assist more goals and help the team even more.”

LFC Globe Verdict

This is an important for the Reds on many different levels. Not only is Jones a local lad who is playing for his boyhood club, but he has also made important contributions to Liverpool during his career. Even though Jones has had to deal with multiple injuries during that time, he is still only 21 years old and should still have many productive years of football ahead of him.
