Liverpool lost their first game in the Europa League this season in an action-packed 4-3 defeat against Ligue 1 side Toulouse.

First Half

It was a bright start for Liverpool who almost went 1-0 up in the third minute as Cody Gakpo's free-kick was met by Joe Gomez whose header rattled the bar as the centre back continued to wait for his first professional goal.

Since that chance, it was a very quiet showing from both sides as Toulouse showed a reluctance to go forward while Liverpool struggled to break down the Ligue 1 side's low block.

Ben Doak had a shot saved inside the box after Toulouse made a mess of a corner but it was easily dealt with by Guillaume Restes.

To much surprise, it was Toulouse that broke the deadlock as Aron Donnum intercepted Kostas Tsimikas who showed too much complacency on the ball as the Norwegian drove forward and his shot made its way by Caoimhin Kelleher via a deflection from Jarrel Quansah.

It was an extremely disappointing first-half for Liverpool who'll certainly need reinforcements off the bench should they want to claim a result in France.

Second Half

Both teams certainly got the memo that the first half wasn't very memorable as they both came out with a point to prove. Klopp decided to bring on Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Trent Alexander-Arnold but their introduction didn't stop Toulouse from doubling their lead.

Thijs Dallinga scored in the 5-1 defeat and was on hand to net past Kelleher with a clinical finish to make it 2-0 to Toulouse. 

It wasn't 2-0 for long as Joe Gomez's looping header across the box was inexplicably turned in by Cassesses Jr in an own goal to lessen the deficit. 

The goal was a shining light for Liverpool to retrieve something from the game but only a minute passed before Frank Magri capitalised on poor defending from Liverpool's backline to score a third goal.

That certainly wasn't the end of the action as Diogo Jota's mazy run and neat finish in the 88th minute provided some hope for Liverpool in the final minutes of the game. 

It looked as if Jarell Quansah had his first goal for Liverpool as his finish nestled in the back of the net to secure Liverpool a point in the dying embers of the game. However, controversy was on hand from the officials who disallowed the goal as Alexis Mac Allister was adjudged to have handled the ball in the lead-up to the goal.

LFC Globe Verdict

While it was a controversial decision from the referee to disallow Quansah's goal at the death, Liverpool's performance was just not good enough.

They were second-best for most of the game and while they remain top of their group, it's a warning for Liverpool that they will need to buck up when they take on the stronger teams in the competition.

Man Of The Match And What's Next?

No Liverpool player deserves to be named man of the match because of the meagre performance they put in. Diogo Jota deserves credit for his solo goal which boosted morale across the team as they looked to find an equaliser.

Liverpool are winless in their last two games in all competitions and now host Brentford at Anfield on November 12th at 14:00 PM (UK time).
