Since the 2022 Ballon d'Or will be awarded in the middle of the season for most European clubs, voters (media members, coaches, and national team captains) will base their decision on players' performances from last season.
The current holder of the Ballon d'Or is Argentina's Lionel Messi, who has won the trophy seven times. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most nominations with 18, including this year.
