Liverpool bolstered their midfield with the signing of 22-year-old Dominik Szoboszlai to a 5-year £60 million on Sunday, July 2nd. Szoboszlai is the Reds' second big signing of the summer period, joining Alexis Mac Allister.
“It's really, really good. I enjoyed the last [few] days and I'm looking forward to knowing everybody better,” Szoboszlai said in his introductory press conference. “ Liverpool is really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”
Szoboszlai comes to Anfield from RB Leipzig where he spent two seasons. During that time, he scored 20 times and dished out 22 assists in 91 appearances.
Szoboszlai has also had success on the international level for Hungary. He has earned 32 caps and scored 7 times. He was named Hungary's team captain in 2022.
Jürgen Klopp believes the signing will benefit Liverpool now and in the future.
"These are proper positives and this is even before we even think about his qualities as a footballer. I will not say too much about them at this stage except they are definitely the kind which will hopefully bring a lot of enjoyment and also help us to get results,” Klopp said.
"Everything about this is good news and I am very grateful to everyone at the club who has contributed to making it happen. This is a signing for our present and also for our future and the work that has gone into it could not be more appreciated."
LFC Globe Verdict
This is a solid and exciting signing. Dominik Szoboszlai is a young player who has a knack for both scoring and setting up goals out of the midfield. He should help replace some of the production lost by the four players who left the club at the end of last season. The only issue might be whether he will see enough playing time. We have seen other players like Calvin Ramsay, Fabio Carvalho and Rhys Williams sent out on loans and other signings like Arthur Melo did not have much success. I hope Szoboszlai can have a long and successful career with Liverpool.
