Mohamed Salah scored for the ninth straight home game in a row to ensure Liverpool's top-four hopes continue as they defeated Brentford 1-0 at Anfield.

First Half

In what was a competitive first half of football, it was Liverpool that took the lead in the 13^th minute through Mohamed Salah who netted his 19^th Premier League goal of the season.

Fabinho put in a sumptuous cross into the box that found Virgil van Dijk who headed across goal to Salah who tapped it in past David Raya.

Liverpool almost had a second in the 28^th minute after Trent Alexander-Arnold split the Brentford defence with a ball over the top for Darwin Núñez but the striker was unable to control the ball.

Brentford almost equalised close to half-time as Ivan Toney's through ball to Bryan Mbeumo saw him get past van Dijk and shrug off a challenge from Alexander-Arnold to finish past Alisson Becker but the goal was subsequently disallowed for offside.

Second Half

A quieter second half ensued for both sides where a lack of clear-cut chances made it a cagey affair.

Cody Gakpo had the best chance of the half to make it 2-0 to Liverpool as Jota drilled the ball across the box in what was an open goal for the Dutchman but he somehow put it wide.

Alexander-Arnold came close to doubling Liverpool's lead in the 77^th minute with a strike outside the box but it was well saved by Raya.

Despite a close last few minutes, Liverpool were able to clinch the victory that now puts them at 62 points, one point behind Manchester United, who have two games in hand.

LFC Globe Verdict

It was no doubt a deserved win for Liverpool who created the better chances throughout the 90 minutes but they truly faced a competitive side in Brentford who didn't give up at all.

Complaints will surely be had about the performance of referee Anthony Taylor who was quick to brandish fouls at Liverpool's expense but ultimately did not affect the final result.

The man of the match today was Mohamed Salah. It was the second game in a row where he scored the only goal of the game as he continues to win points for Liverpool in their chase for UEFA Champions League Football.

Liverpool are next in action on Monday (May 15) when they play Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
