A much-changed Liverpool side stemmed the hosts' hopes of a quick start as they smothered Newcastle and dominated the ball inside the opening stages, although Eddie Howe's side largely avoided conceding any big opportunities.
However, the Reds took the lead inside the opening 20 minutes through Naby Keita's fourth goal of the season, with the midfielder playing a one-two with Diogo Jota before rounding goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and slamming the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Jurgen Klopp's side.
Liverpool continued to have chances throughout the afternoon as Dubravka was called into action on more than one occasion, with the Reds bringing on the likes of Fabinho, Thiago and Mohamed Salah off the bench in the second half.
They were unable to find a second to kill the game off, but there was little in the way of drama for Alisson as the Reds eventually cruised to a comfortable 1-0 victory to put the onus on title rivals Manchester City, who require a win against Leeds United later today to go back to the top of the table.
